Doi Chaang village is in the northern highlands of Chiang Rai Province, North Thailand.
H.M. King Bhumibhol Adulyadej Rama IX motivated hill tribe farmers to grow winter plants instead of opium to reduce reliance on illegal drug cultivation. Arabica coffee plants were amongst these.
Cooperatives such as Thai-Germany and Thai-Netherlands and the Department of Social Welfare provided assistance to the farmers in the North.
About 40 families in Doi Chaang received coffee plants from H.M. the King and continued to cultivate coffee. In the early days, Thai coffee was under developed and not recognized for quality in the market.
The hill tribe people were not recognized by Thai law and hence were often taken advantage of by middlemen who would buy crops at a fraction of their true value.
Fortunately, farmers in Doi Chaang village started working towards a more sustainable growth for their product, led by the family of Mr. Panachai Pisailert together with Mr. Wicha Phromyong, and thus established Doi Chaang Coffee Original Co., Ltd. in 2003 with Mr. Pitsanuchai Kaewpichai as co-founder and business advisor. The company’s main objectives were to assist Doi Chang coffee growers in getting a fair price for their production,.
The founders of ME THAI were born and raised in Doi Chaang and experienced the amazing transformation that has made Thai coffee known to the world.
